The Red Dragon of Classic Dungeons & Dragons Basic Set is one of the most iconic images in RPGs, so much that Wizards of the Coast used it again (along the Red Box graphics) for the introductory box set of Dungeons & Dragons Essentials (Basic Fourth Edition?). There is no doubt that a certain number of people bought it, especially on line, convinced that it was the original Red Box, shrinkwrapped and at an awesome price. Frank Mentzer in a recent Facebook post recalled the history of an alternative image for the Red Box, with more adventurers confronting the evil Red Dragon. However, it seems that Gary Gygax vetoed it and asked Larry Elmore to do a new drawing of the Fighter alone versus the Red Dragon - the rest, as often it's said, is history...
There was much interest in the concept drawing so Larry Elmore has prepared an high resolution print that may be purchased from his website for the joy of all fans wishing to own a little piece of Dungeons & Dragons history.
